DIY edible paint using condensed milk & food colouring.

This DIY edible paint recipe can be rustled up in about 60 seconds & makes a great project for kids to do outdoors, or indoors, on rainy days.

It also uses just 2 ingredients too – condensed milk & food colouring.

And since it’s edible, it’s also really fun to dip a sneaky finger or two into the paint and eat a bit (limiting how much obviously, as condensed milk is super sugary!)

Edible Paint For Brushes, Finger Painting & Potato Printing!

Making your DIY edible paint with your toddler, or young child, really involves them in the process, giving them ownership and turning them into mini inventors. (This easy homemade playdough is another activity kids love.)

You can either use this homemade edible paint with paint brushes or try it out as an edible finger paint.

And since the paint has a nice, gloopy, thick consistency, it also works well for potato printing. There’s a nice potato printing tutorial here.

This quick & easy DIY edible paint also gives a off a lovely sheen, making it an all round sensory experience for curious toddlers, as well as older kids.

5 Benefits of Painting For Children

It’s such a classic activity for kids, it’s easy to forget that painting actually has lots of educational benefits for children. These include:

  1. promotion of creativity
  2. building of fine motor skills
  3. outlet for self expression
  4. development of decision making & problem solving skills
  5. stress relieving.

Plus, of course, it’s good old fashioned messy fun!

Here’s how to make DIY edible paint with condensed milk in about 60 seconds (or less!)

What You’ll Need To Make DIY Edible Paint

  • Tin of sweetened condensed milk
  • Food colouring of choice (red, blue, green & yellow work well)
  • Small bowls or containers
  • Tablespoon
  • Tea spoons for mixing
  • Paint brushes and paper for painting

How To Make DIY Edible Paint (With Condensed Milk)

Step 1 – Add 3-4 tablespoons of condensed milk to a small bowl or container.

Step 2 – Add 2-3 drops of food colouring to the condensed milk and stir well until the colour is combined with the condensed milk and looks like paint.

TIP: If you prefer to avoid the chemicals in many food dyes, try making your own natural food colouring with this recipe from Bigger Bolder Baking.

Step 3 – Get painting!

If using your DIY edible food paint outdoors, you probably don’t need to worry so much about mess, but if you’re using the paint as an indoor activity, it’s a good idea to use a wipe able table cloth.

Due to this homemade paint containing condensed milk, the paint is quite thick, so it takes longer to dry than other paints. It may take up to a day to dry out completely, so keep in mind you’ll need to leave your child’s painting in a safe place to dry out overnight.

DIY Edible Paint: Conclusion

Making your own DIY edible paint with condensed milk is a great activity to do with toddlers & young kids. It works equally well as an outdoor activity for kids to do in the garden, or as an indoor activity on rainy days.

Using only 2 ingredients (condensed milk & food colouring), this edible homemade paint is easy & fun to make. And with its thick consistency, it works well with a paintbrush or as a homemade finger paint.

And perhaps best of all – you can eat it!
