Looking for the best reusable, eco friendly coffee cups?
It’s estimated 300 billion disposable coffee cups end up in landfill each year, where they can take up to 30 years to decompose.
And despite the fact hundreds of thousands of us make the effort to put our takeaway coffee cups into a recycling bin, many (if not most) are not recyclable.
Despite looking like they’re recyclable, most disposable paper cups actually contain a thin plastic lining, which makes them almost impossible to recycle in a standard recycling mill (which is where most end up). Paper cups are also resource heavy to manufacture, which is another reason they’re not eco friendly.
Did You Know?
- Coffee cups are estimated to be the second-largest contributor to litter waste after plastic bottles.
- Research suggests you may be consuming harmful micro plastic particles as you sip your hot drink, due to the plastic lining in paper cups that makes them waterproof.
Are Compostable Cups Eco Friendly?
Compostable paper cups are now much more common & instead of petroleum based plastic linings, they contain a bio-based plastic lining derived from renewable plants. So they’re definitely an improvement on most standard takeaway cups.
However, according to this article, there’s little point using a compostable or biodegradable paper cup unless it’s going to a composting facility. And commercial composting facilities aren’t currently widely available. Home composting won’t help either, as it won’t get hot enough to break the cups down.
So the greenest approach to your takeaway coffee is to take your own reusable, eco friendly coffee cup. You’ll often find a coffee shop will also give you a discount if you bring your own reusable cup.
