9 Non Toxic Play Mats For Babies (Organic & Eco Options 2023)

Investing in non toxic play mats for babies is a practical way to reduce chemical exposure on your little one.

Babies love to roll around on the floor exploring, chewing and tugging on everything in sight! It’s a natural and essential part of any baby’s development.

However, many toddler and baby play mats (& changing pads) contain polyurethane foam or PVC – materials that have been linked with potential health issues.

And whilst it’s true babies naturally come into contact with some dirt & toxins, they also have developing immune systems, which makes it harder for them to fend of toxins.

So, where you can, it makes sense to shop for eco friendly play mats & baby products that are free from, (or at least contain less of) chemicals of most concern.

What To Look For In Non Toxic Baby Play Mats

As a guide, when shopping for a non toxic play mat for your baby or toddler, look out for mats that are free from PVC, polyurethane containing flame retardants and EVA foam.

PVC often contains lead & phthalates and the main problem with polyurethane foam is that it often contains flame retardants. Lead, phthalates & flame retardants have all been linked to potential health concerns in children. The jury’s out a bit on the general safety of polyurethane foam, but whilst it’s often considered a safer material, it has also been linked to respiratory issues & VOCS.

And EVA foam, although sometimes considered a safer alternative, has been found to off gas formamide, a suspected carcinogen.

Whilst some experts argue that even if formamide is emitted, it’s in such small doses, it likely won’t do any harm, strict limits have been imposed on it in EU countries such as the UK, France and Belgium.

9 Of The Best Non Toxic Play Mats For Babies

Ultimately, it’s almost impossible to avoid chemicals altogether (and we’d probably go mad trying to), but what we can do as parents is aim to be as informed as possible & make our own decisions from there.

Non Toxic Play Mats For Babies FAQS

Here are some common questions you might find useful regarding organic & non toxic play mats for babies & toddlers.

Is EVA Foam Safe For Babies?

Research has shown EVA foam releases formamide into the air. Formamide is an irritant & has been linked to developmental issues.

Even EVA play mats which suggest they are non toxic may still contain it, as there are allowable limits for this chemical in safety testing. So many people choose to avoid it.

Is TPU Foam Safe For Babies?

TPU foam, or Thermoplastic Polyurethane, is, as the name suggests, a form of polyurethane.

However, the material is inert & doesn’t off-gas potentially harmful VOCs like polyurethane foam does. It also doesn’t require plasticizers (for example, phthalates or BPA) to give it flexibility.

So the general consensus is that TPU foam is non toxic.

Are There Any Non Toxic Play Mat Certifications?

Whilst there are no certifications that apply specifically to play mats, when looking for non toxic or eco friendly play mats, organic options are often a good choice, especially if they’re GOTS Certified. GOTS is the leading worldwide textile processing standard for organic fibres, such as cotton, flax or hemp.

The GOTS Certification shows a fibre has been grown without the use of toxic pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, or genetic engineering. It also shows a natural fibre has been produced according to strict environmental & social criteria, which helps protect both environmental & worker conditions.

Similarly, the GOLS mark shows a product is made from, or contains, organically grown rubber latex.

Oeko-Tex 100 is another recognised certification, which shows a textile has been tested and proven free of harmful levels of certain toxic substances.

And if you’re undecided about a foam play mat, some products include the CertiPUR mark, which shows it has been tested against vigorous standards for chemical emissions.

What Are The Best Non Toxic Play Mats In The UK?

If you live in the UK, oe Europe, it can be really frustrating if you find a non toxic play mat you love the look of, only to find it’s not available there. One option is to get a mat shipped from the US (if available), but this obviously bumps the price up.

If you can’t find what you’re looking for, the Ofie Play Mat is usually available. Etsy can also be a good place to look for handmade organic play mats for babies & toddlers. Finch & Folk organic play mats ship to the UK & Europe, but expect to pay over £20 for postage.

You may also want to check out the non toxic play mats from Pure Earth Collection. A fairly new play mat, they’re made from non toxic, sustainable and biodegradable materials, including natural rubber foam & cork.

What’s The Best Non Toxic Play Mat For Babies For Use On Hardwood Floors?

If you plan to use your play mat on a hardwood floor, some play mats, non toxic or otherwise, may slip, especially cotton ones. Pillobebe’s non toxic Corkimat is a popular option to consider for use on hardwood floors, as it features a silicon anti-slip fabric on the bottom of the removable cover.

You could also use an anti slip rug underlay, (underneath your play mat) made from a natural material such as silicone rubber.

Best Non Toxic Play Mats For Babies: Conclusion

If you have a baby or toddler, play mats can prove a really practical addition to your home.

Not only do they aid with visual and motor development, they also offer a safer space for babies to explore their surroundings. Floors and carpets can be a bit of a haven for dust & bacteria, so a play mat can help ensure a healthier environment for baby to roll, crawl and play.

It’s impossible to avoid toxins completely, of course, but choosing an organic or non toxic play mat goes that step further, helping you to reduce your child’s exposure to toxins that may be present in some common forms of foam play mats.

This helps ensure your baby has a safer & healthier place to explore without you having to worry too much about hidden toxins.

Hi, Sarah. I’m a fan of play mats at home so that babies and kids can roam around safely at home. I have some with pictures of cities and road tracks for kids to play with their cars and little peoples. It’s a load of fun for them. I used to have one favorite with this city and road track patterns and it was stated non toxic.

However, we had some water spilled and water seeped in. It dried but became powdery on the base and emitted smell like chemical that I had to throw it away. I don’t even know if it is true that it is non toxic play mat as it says but the smell put me off and I had to throw it away despite the fact the kids love it. How can we be sure if it is non toxic?

Hi Mjia, If you follow the tips on this post it will really help – the main things to look for in my experience are mats that are flame retardant, PVC, polyurethane and EVA foam free. If you’re ever unsure, you can always contact the manufacturer or ask for their lab reports. At the end of the day, It’s pretty much impossible to say something is 100% ‘non toxic’, but for me it’s more about finding the safest products we can for our kids, with the information currently available. Hope that helps.

Great guide, but your last one is not safe at all. PVC, even phthalate free, still contains chlorine which emits dioxin. PVC is never safe. I suggest you remove it.

Hi there, many thanks for your comments. I’m not personally a fan of PVC either and am v conscious of the dioxin debate, but as I understand it dioxin can only be released from PVC when it is burned at low or extremely high temperatures. I also suggest that if you’re not comfortable with PVC, it’s better to choose one of the other mats.
